Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ICH HABE IHN GESEHEN!!!!

Project Update #90: The Veronica Mars Movie Project by Rob Thomas Project Update #90: So, how did we do? Plus: expanding to more theaters & locations!
Spoiler:
Gang,
Veronica Mars might be out, but our Kickstarter isn't over yet.
I'm still expecting to send at least a few more updates. We've still got the final rewards to produce (DVDs, Blu-Rays) and send out (signed posters). Now that you've seen the movie, there are a few more behind-the-scenes goodies we can finally show you. And, of course, if there's news to share, I'll do that too.
I'm writing this from Vancouver, where I've been immersed in iZOMBIE preproduction all week. We've finished casting all of our leads. We start shooting Monday.
Opening Weekend
Last week, I told you that our most important goal was to make a movie that you – our backers – would love. Based on the feedback we've been getting this week, I feel like we succeeded.
But let's be honest: when you spend a year making a movie, you also want it to do well in theaters, and you hope it'll get good reviews from the critics. With opening weekend behind us, I'm relieved to tell you that our movie seems to be succeeding at those goals, too.
As you might have seen, Veronica Mars had a great weekend at the box office. A "great weekend" is a relative term, of course, but I think we did great: for a movie that appeared on fewer than 300 screens and was available on-demand and online, we still made over $2 million at the box office alone. That was enough to put us in the Top 10, and gave us the second-highest per screen average for the weekend.
We also did well with the critics: Veronica Mars has been Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, getting a 76% from critics and 95% from fans. Among critics, the most common complaint is that the movie is "too fan focused," and you know what? I'm okay with that. We've been away a long time. There was some catching up to do, and like many of you, there was a lot that I wanted to see in this movie.
Next time, maybe we'll make a movie that's 100% accessible to audiences who have never seen Veronica Mars. Speaking of which:
I know that a lot of you have been writing, and posting to ask about a sequel: if it will happen, what number we need to hit, whether we'd fund it through another Kickstarter, and so on.
Here's the answer to all of those questions: it's too soon to know.
I know that everyone involved would love to keep on going. I hope that we will. But there's no news on that yet, and it might be a while before we know. I'm so happy to get the seven-year "Will there be a Veronica Mars movie?" monkey off my back, that I could use a little time to savor this moment before launching the "Will there be another Veronica Mars movie?" crusade. Know this: I'd love for it to happen, and early signs are encouraging.
This weekend: more theaters & more locations!
By now, I hope that most of you have gotten to see the movie, in some form. But if you were still hoping for the chance to see Veronica Mars in a theater, I might have some good news for you. Based on our strong performance last weekend, Warner Bros. has been able to arrange to expand our theatrical release.
Tomorrow, Veronica Mars will expand to over 50 more screens and 15 new locations in North America, with even more to follow over the next two weekends.
This weekend, Veronica Mars will be expanding to theaters in:
UNITED STATES
Alabama - Birmingham Arkansas - Little Rock California - Monterey Idaho - Boise Idaho - Twin Falls Indiana - South Bend Massachussetts - Springfield Minnesota - Duluth North Dakota - Fargo Oregon - Eugene South Carolina - Greenville Vermont - Burlington Washington - Yakima CANADA
Saskatchewan - Regina Saskatchewan - Saskatoon If you're not on this list, don't give up just yet: Warner Bros. is still working on arranging for theatrical releases in even more locations, including several that you've been asking for in the comments. I'm told we'll have more locations to announce for weekends 3 and 4.
--
Finally, to those of you that went out and saw the movie in theaters last weekend: thank you.
From your comments, I saw that many of you drove for hours to get to the nearest theater -- even though you had digital copies waiting at home. I hope you felt the effort was worth it.
More soon,
Rob

Veronica Mars novel -- The Thousand Dollar Tan Line
Spoiler:
But for those of you wondering what to expect, here's what I will confirm:
• The books picks up just a few months after the events of the movie, but the movie is not designed as a cliffhanger. If you want to know what happens next after the movie, the book will tell you that. But you won't need to read the book to get closure. The film -- which I wrote before I ever knew there would be novels -- is able to stand alone. That said...
• The books will exist in the same official "universe" as the series and film. Sometimes, novels that build on the events of television shows or films are isolated spin-off stories, or adventures that seem to take place in some forgettable parallel universe. This is not one of those times. The Thousand Dollar Tan Line is the actual next chapter in Veronica's life.
• The book will still be official, even if we make more movies. I've said that I'd like to make more movies, if this one does well, and that's still true. If (or when) we get that chance, one of two things will happen: we'll either (1) adapt the novel, and use it as the basis for the next movie, or (2) have the movie pick up after the events of the books take place. I'm not sure which it will be; we'll figure it out when the time comes. But we won't ignore the book, or pretend it never happened.
• The book's mystery is based on the original idea for the movie. When I started talking about making a Veronica Mars movie, just after the show's cancellation, I had a specific story that I wanted to tell. But last year, when I finally began writing the script, I realized that we'd need to tell a different story first: one that brought our characters back together after years apart. As a follow-up to the movie, the book gave me the chance to pursue my original idea again.
• The book will feature the return of another important figure from Veronica's past -- someone you already know from the show -- who didn't return for the movie. And I promise, this isn't a cheap ploy to get you interested. I'm not talking about a cameo from a minor character. This character is important to Veronica, and has a significant role in the book.
